Three pictures of one life

A life is too large for one picture, so Sky & Season draws three. Each answers a different question, and each needs a different amount from you.

The Birth Moment

Who am I, and how does my energy naturally run?

Your birth moment in four parts — year, month, day and hour. Each part is a painting of the sky (an essence) over a painting of the ground (a seasonal stage). At the centre sits your core essence, and every other part meets it as one of ten forces. Think of it as the grain of the wood.

Needs your date of birth. The hour adds the fourth part.

The Star Map

Where does my life gather its energy, room by room?

A floor plan of a life: twelve rooms — self, partnership, work, home and so on — and the lights that were shining in each room when you were born. Great lights set a room’s character; helping lights soften it; sharp lights sharpen it. Four small marks give certain rooms extra charge. Think of it as the house you live in.

Needs your date and time of birth. Without a time the map stays quiet.

The Strategy Board

Given where things stand this hour, which way should I move?

Not drawn from your birth at all, but for this hour. Nine grounds laid out like a compass, redrawn every two hours; you stand on one, the matter on another. Each ground has four layers — who walks with you, what the sky is doing, which way is open, what the ground holds. Think of it as the weather and the terrain outside the door right now.

Needs nothing from you. Choose what your question is about and read the board for this hour.

The Birth Moment

The ten core essences

Two for each of the five elements: one bold and outward, one gentle and inward. Your core essence comes from the day you were born and is the centre of gravity of your chart.

The twelve seasonal stages

The ground under each part of your birth moment: a stage of the year from the waiting seed to the fallen soil. Each stage describes a kind of motion — beginning, rising, peaking, settling, letting go.

The ten forces, in five pairs

Every other essence in a chart meets the core essence in one of ten ways. Each pair has a softer and a sharper form; once you know the pair, you know half of what the force means.

The ten-year seasons and the weather of the year

Life moves through decade-long seasons, each with its own stage and essence; the one marked Now is the backdrop of this decade. Over it pass the shorter weathers of this year, this month and today, each leaning toward one of your ten forces.

The Star Map

The twelve rooms

Every life has the same twelve rooms. What differs is which lights live in them. Rooms face each other in pairs across the map, and an empty room borrows the light of the room directly across.

  1. 1.The room of life itself — who you are, how you meet the world, the direction of your life
  2. 2.The room of siblings and peers — brothers, sisters, close peers and partners in work
  3. 3.The room of partnership — love, marriage and the person beside you
  4. 4.The room of children and what you create — children, students, projects and what you bring to life
  5. 5.The room of wealth and resources — how money comes, how it goes, and how you handle it
  6. 6.The room of health and body — your body, your energy and how you carry stress
  7. 7.The room of movement and the wider world — travel, moving, and how you are seen away from home
  8. 8.The room of friends and allies — friends, teams, networks and the people you lead
  9. 9.The room of career and calling — work, vocation, ambition and public role
  10. 10.The room of home and property — home, family roots, property and your sense of place
  11. 11.The room of wellbeing and inner peace — contentment, pleasures, spirit and peace of mind
  12. 12.The room of parents and elders — parents, mentors, authority and where you come from

The twenty-eight lights

Four families: fourteen great lights that give each room its character, six helping lights, six sharp lights and two wandering gifts. Every light shines more or less brightly depending on its room.

The Sharp Lights

The Wandering Gifts

The four marks

  • Plenty — Things come easily in this room — money, help, goodwill.
  • Power — You take charge here, and your word carries weight.
  • Renown — You are seen, trusted and spoken well of here.
  • Tender spot — You care a great deal here, so it can hurt; it is also where you learn the most.

The Strategy Board

The five elements

Every ground, way, sky and companion is made of one of five natural elements. They feed one another in a circle — water feeds wood, wood feeds fire, fire leaves earth, earth holds metal, metal gathers water — and they hold one another in check: water puts out fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, wood breaks up earth, earth dams water. That is all the board uses.

The four layers of a ground

Tap any ground on the board and it opens in this order. The companion and the sky are things you cannot change — luck and timing. The way is the part you choose. The ground is the plain fact underneath.

  1. 1Who walks with youThe Companion — unseen backing: luck, goodwill, or something slippery at your elbow.
  2. 2What the sky is doingThe Sky — timing and conditions beyond your control, like weather over a field.
  3. 3Which way is openThe Way — the kind of action this ground rewards. For most questions, the layer that matters most.
  4. 4What the ground holdsThe Ground — the setting, the resources, the place itself. It never moves.

The Nine Grounds

The land itself. Each ground faces one direction and is made of one element; they never move.

The Eight Ways

The path open on each ground this hour — what kind of move the moment rewards. Three are generous, two mixed, three ask for care.

The Nine Skies

The weather over each ground — timing, mood and outside conditions. A sky does not tell you what to do; it tells you what you are doing it under.

The Eight Companions

Who walks beside you on each ground — unseen help, or unseen trouble. The Standard-Bearer is the strongest helper on the board.
